A teaching from the book of Chögyal Namkhai Norbu
by SMS teacher Elías Capriles

Elias Capriles

Professor Elías Capriles is one of the most respected Spanish-speaking scholars of Buddhism and is an authorized Santi Maha Sangha teacher appointed by Master Chögyal Namkhai Norbu.

From 1973 to 1983, he lived in Nepal and India, where, in addition to undertaking strict Dzogchen Upadesha retreats in the Himalayas, he studied with important Tibetan Dzogchen masters such as Khyabje Dudjom Rinpoche, Khyabje Thinle Norbu (Dungse) Rinpoche, Khyabje Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche, among others. During this period, he received his first teachings from Khyabje Namkhai Norbu Rinpoche. In 1978 he met Chögyal Namkhai Norbu and found his teachings to be most appropriate for our time. Later he invited Rinpoche to Venezuela and in 1986 ChNN founded the Dzogchen Community there.

Elias is a member of the board of the International Transpersonal Association and, until 2024, of the Asociación Transpersonal Iberoamericana, as well as of several academic journals, including the International Journal of Transpersonal Studies and Humania del Sur. His work has been discussed in books on philosophy published in France, Spain, Mexico and Venezuela, as well as in the Journal of Transpersonal Psychology.

He helped found the Entidad Coordinadora Ecológica Arturo Eichler and participated in ecological initiatives. He created and managed two Spiritual Emergency Refuges in Nepal and India. He received an honorary doctorate (Doctor Honoris Causa) from the Universidad de Los Andes in Mérida, Venezuela.
